Day Camp at Tennessee State
University, welcoming 14 campers in
grades 4–8 for a week of hands-on
learning about agriculture, gardening,
nutrition, and the many parts of our food
system. Throughout the week, campers
explored where food comes from and
gained practical skills they can continue
using at home.
Campers toured the TSU goat and cattle farm, where they
learned about livestock management, animal nutrition, and the
role livestock play in agriculture. They also had the opportunity
to meet several livestock species up close throughout the week,
giving many campers their 昀椀rst chance to interact with farm
animals.
One of the week’s highlights was exploring the TSU greenhouse
and hydroponic growing systems. Campers learned about
di昀昀erent methods of growing food before potting up tomato and
pepper plants to take home. They also created mason jar herb
gardens and spent time planting vegetables in the community
garden, learning about soil, plant care, and the importance of
fresh produce.
Campers also explored careers in agriculture through visits from
professionals, including a veterinarian who discussed animal
